7 reasons why Functional fabric are required for sportswear

Do shoes also breathe? This advertisement was run on television when we were young. It was about sports shoes and the USP was that this sports shoe had a simple technology. It allowed air to pass through the shoes. Sportspeople have specialised clothing manufactured to meet the demands of the different sports they are from.

The technology that goes into manufacturing sports apparel is undergoing rapid changes. You cannot really expect a Virat Kohli having the same sportswear as a Sunil Chhetri. You also want your sportswear to be of the world-class levels like what your favourite sportspersons wear. In this blog, we peek into some of the reasons why specialised fabric is required for sportswear.

Thermal properties

The fabric needs to consider the thermal insulation properties of sport. In hot weather it should stay cool while in cool weather it should stay rather warm. For example, in hot weather, the fabric needs to be of good thermal conductivity. Being bad insulators, they do not absorb air thereby keeping the fabric cooler. The cooler a fabric can keep you, the better it is for you.

Wicking

Moisture control is an essential feature that goes into sportswear. Moisture needs to pass through the fabric to the outer surface allowing it to dry quickly. This ability is dependent on the construction of the fabric. Drywicking is a new phenomenon that propels sweat into the outer layer leading to evaporation and resultant cooling.

Breathable fabrics

Sports fabrics need to ensure that sweat evaporates off the body fast. In case the garment is unable to push sweat to the exterior, it will result increasing the body temperature of the sportsperson. Moreover, the fabric should also safeguard against rain and wind. This phenomenon helps to keep sportspersons cooler.

Elasticity

Sportswear should be elastic and should not restrict movement. Cotton is not elastic and restricts movement. Imagine your favourite sportsperson not able to perform to his best as he could not move properly or the garment he was wearing was too much for comfort.

Stretchable

The sportswear needs to be able to withstand the strain of different forms of sport. Various forms of sport require varying degrees of stretchability. Gymnasts, for example, require fabrics that are extremely stretchable for easy movement. This requires the apparel to be of knitted construction.

Soft hand feel

Sportswear needs to be comfortable. More it is required to be smooth to the touch. Unless and until the apparel is comfortable, you wouldn’t be able to perform to your fullest, right!

Athleisure

This is the latest trend usually carried forward by celebrities. As more and more of us move towards this trend, it has been widely accepted. Traditional sports outfits are being termed fashionable. This required sportswear to be more versatile and fashionable.

Conclusion

As we understand, cotton is more bacteria-resistant but it more moisture making you uncomfortable after a strenuous workout. Hence the requirement is for a fabric that blends with technical fabrics that will transform it into a performance fabric. A fabric that can be used to manufacture for sports greats. And as athleisure is more in vogue, you need to feel comfortable as well.
